Easy No Cook Playdough

Playdough

We have a fun time at our house making our own things rather than purchasing them. Why buy playdough if you can make it with ingredients already in your cupboard?

Many no-cook playdough recipes call for cream of tarter. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have cream of tarter sitting around at my house so I needed to figure out a way to make it without it!

I did it!

I love this recipe because it doesn’t require any cooking, and it was made in minutes, which is perfect for my impatient little guy!

There’s an optional ingredient in this for you to add lotion, which makes it super soft AND adds a nice scent if you’d like!

We were able to make this in about 10 minutes and it provides hours of fun!

What you’ll need:

Amounts:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup salt

Instructions:

  1. Combine the water and lemon juice in a microwavable safe bowl, place in microwave and bring to a boil (about 2 to 3 minutes)
  2. While it’s going, combine all the other ingredients in a mixing bowl (baking soda, cornstarch, salt, and oil)
  3. When the water and lemon juice is done, slowly pour and stir it into the mixing bowl.  It will bubble, and that’s okay! If you’d like to add food coloring you can do so now.  If you don’t have food coloring, kool aid packets or kool aid mixers work just as well! Mix everything together and it should begin to form a dough-like consistency.  If it’s too gooey you can add a cornstarch until your desired consistency.
  4. OPTIONAL-You can add lotion to your playdough to make it soft and smell good! Pour about half a bottle of lotion into the bowl and knead it together. You’ll probably want to add more cornstarch after this. Continue adding cornstarch until the right consistency forms.

Originally the color was pink. After we added the lotion it became a very pale pink, which is okay!

asked me to make ours a tie-dye color, so in order to do this I added some blue food coloring AFTER I created the playdough consistency.  This ensured it didn’t completely mix and I was able to give it the tie-dye look. (Be careful, the color will get on your hands!) He wanted to make a pool!

You will want to store the playdough in an airtight container when it isn’t being used because it will dry out easily.  Store it in the refrigerator to make it last even longer, but on the counter will work just as well.

We had loads of fun making this and then playing with it!
